what happens to recyclables

Just Because There Is Space In Your Roll Off Dumpster Doesn't Mean You Can Fill It With Anything

It doesn't matter if you are using a roll off dumpster service for your home garbage or for business garbage, there are items you are not allowed to put in them. You may think that, because there is a lot of room in the bin, you can toss that old television in it. You would be wrong. The company that comes to pick up your dumpster may refuse to take it away if there are prohibited items in it. If they do take it, you may end up with a larger bill because the company now needs to go through your trash and pull out the contraband. Here are some of the things you cannot put into a normal, roll off dumpster.

Electronics

Landfills do not want a bunch of electronic equipment taking up space. In addition, these products contain things like mercury, lead and cadmium that may leech into the ground water and end up in your kitchen sink. They can cause serious health problems such as reproductive impairment, cancer and emphysema.

Tires

Tires are not considered hazardous waste, but they do pose a special problem when dumped into landfills. Because of their shape, they do not flatten properly. This means they take up more space than necessary. The air space in the tires also causes them to rise to the top of the pile and create a safety hazard when other, heavy items are placed on top. These heavy items can easily fall as the tire moves about in the pile when being pushed with the front-end loader.

Hazardous Wastes

Many things you commonly toss into your garbage can are actually hazardous wastes. It might seem like a waste of time and energy, but you should keep a separate garbage bin for these things and then take them to the hazardous wastes receiving area in your city. This will include items like:

  • Paint
  • Cleaning products
  • Medicines
  • Fertilizer
  • Insecticides
  • Antifreeze
  • Motor oil
  • Pool chemicals
  • Partially filled aerosol cans
  • Batteries

Anything liquid that has chemicals in it should be checked against the banned items list for the landfill in your area. If you are unsure, call the dumpster company and ask.

Keeping the world safe for future generations is part of your job as a member of society. Proper disposal of your trash will not only help the environment, but could keep people from becoming ill. Don't try to hide the banned items in the bottom of the roll off dumpster, you will be caught, and it may cost you money. You will either be charged more for the service, or be fined by the city.
